Samira Azzam (1927–1967) was born in Acre, Palestine, and began publishing short stories in the journal Falastin in her teens. A journalist and prolific English-Arabic translator of Pearl Buck, Somerset Maugham, John Steinbeck, and others, she also authored several collections of short stories and had been working on a novel when she died of a heart attack at just 40 years old. A collection of her short stories, titled Out of Time: The Collected Stories of Samira Azzam was published in Ranya Abdelrahman’s translation by ALQ Books in 2022.
