Modesty aside, the present-day reader will find a great deal of interest in the author’s record of the places and people he meets in his journey from the Mediterranean to Bombay, thence along the Tigris and Euphrates to the Persian Gulf. The narrative is illustrated with a number of photographs, drawings and maps.
